I’m available for in-person and online visits!

Fees FOR In Person VISITS

All prices below include a Q&A session as well as a book signing.

Most presentations range from 45 to 60 minutes, with shorter options for younger audiences.

Rates are based on all presentations being in the same building/location.

Katie is happy to join students and/or faculty for lunch for all half-day and full-day visits.

  • $1,200:  Full day – up to 4 presentations

  • $700:  Half day –  2 presentations,  scheduled back-to-back

  • $400: Single Presentation (only available for schools within 1 hour drive of Mentor, OH)

Katie travels from her home in Mentor, OH. Travel & lodging fees may be shared between schools/libraries. ***

  • Up to 90-minute drive —  No travel fees

  • More than 90-minute drive — $0.65/mile travel fee (or flight) in addition to safe/clean hotel accommodations and meals where applicable. 

    ***No travel fees for visits in the Greater Cincinnati area

ALL ABOUT MAZIE! How “MAYBE JUST ASK ME!” was made

I will share why I wrote MAYBE ASK ME! and then go through how it was created, starting with the idea through rough manuscript drafts and the final manuscript. Then, I’ll share the illustration process from rough thumbnails to final artwork. I’ll explain how books are published and, even though it’s just my name on the cover, there is a whole community behind every book. I’ll conclude by reading the book and introducing a craft based on it (which can be either a group project or an individual craft).

Everyone Has Big Emotions! (Paired With A Reading)

I’ll read EVERYONE SAYS PLEASE (EXCEPT CAT). We’ll talk about Cat’s emotions and expressions. I’ll show the kids how I draw cats with big shapes. Then, we will all draw our favorite animals with big emotions. I’ll wrap up by reading EVERYONE SHARES (EXCEPT CAT)

All About Biographies

I’ll go through how I write and illustrate picture book biographies. I’ll review primary and secondary sources and show examples of primary and secondary sources used in ANNETTE FEELS FREE and BEULAH HAS A HUNCH! with the text and/or illustrations from the book. I’ll talk about where I find facts, how to tell if a source is reliable, and why Wikipedia is NOT a good source. (I even share my secret on how to use Wikipedia the right way.) Using examples from ANNETTE FEELS FREE and BEULAH HAS A HUNCH! I will then go over what I look for to bring the facts to life and develop a character and picture book.

Storymath! (no numbers involved)

In this interactive presentation, I will guide students in creating a character, adding emotion, and crafting a story. I will share the “storymath” equation with them: character + emotion = story. This presentation includes drawing, writing, and sharing.

Mirrors, Windows And Sliding Glass Doors

This interactive presentation involves a “book tasting” by students,student-led discussion about the idea of “Mirror, Windows and Sliding Glass Doors” and drawing a panel that explores what a book is to the student.
